Intimate Musgrove Retreat Garden Wedding at St. Simon’s Island with a Pop of Pastel

I love this inspiration session in particular because the venue is so incredibly stunning. Hosted on a somewhat remote island near Savannah, the Musgrove Retreat on St. Simon’s Island gives you all the privacy you could ever want. Nestled amongst a 600-acre oak forest, every twist and turn makes for the most beautiful wedding photos you’ve ever seen.

Musgrove has 8 locations you can use for your wedding. But of course, with the Covid wedding landscape, we wanted this session to be conscious of the necessary intimate nature surrounding today’s nuptial celebrations. We chose to host the event at the Pool House and Maze Garden, both of which are luxurious, parallel to each other, and right on the river.

Even in the summer, the cool Island breezes kept us (and our “bride”) reasonably comfortable throughout the day!

We chose a small outdoor table setting for an intimate brunch, and had the table filled with flowers in juxtaposing pastels! Sitting under the Spanish moss strewn oak trees, the brunch reception table glowed gloriously in the dappled late morning light.

For the attire: The bridal dress chosen was light and airy, with lots of thin layers of tulle and simple embellishment over the bust— perfect for a late spring or summer wedding at St. Simon’s. There are two pairs of shoes, depending on taste. The classic, strappy heels by Bella Belle for the ceremony, and the gorgeous embroidered peep-toe booties for an afternoon or early evening reception/getaway. The groom was also decked in a more casual, but luxurious linen suit, with a unique flare in the light blue-grey jacket. Finally, the bridesmaid dress was beaded all over, and in the colors of the wedding floral arrangements.

The colors of this inspiration are really about juxtaposition, balance, and bringing brightness and lightness— JOY— to the wedding. To allow the guests and couple the experience of brighter and refreshing days. Its tied together through the venue, even with the pool (which is so blue and refreshing looking you just want to jump in).

Finally, we love the rich history associated with Musgrove! The venue was named after its founder, Mary Musgrove, a pioneer who was always doing her best to connect colonial and Native American communities. And since then, US presidents have used the property to hold important meetings as well as many other political groups (such as National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, Johns Hopkins University, the Advocacy Institute, and the Women’s Legal Defense Fund). Given today’s social and political landscape, we love that using this venue can continue to support growth and positive change.

I’m Janelle, the “J” behind J.J. Au’Clair! I discovered photography in 2008, and have been specializing in weddings now for over 10 years. Nothing compares to the reward of documenting beautiful experiences, and the stories I’ve had the privilege to capture all share one common message — Love! A little bit about me: I am a hopeless romantic, wild for travel, and an avid adventure seeker. I believe in simple acts of kindness and am so thankful for my couples, who are always striving to make this world a more beautiful and compassionate place.
